🐰 Bunny Bootcamp on the Ranchette! DIY Rabbit Shelters for Winter

Welcome back to Ranchette Dreams!Today’s episode was a fun (and slightly chaotic) one—because it’s Bunny Bootcamp time! Winter is rolling in, and that means it’s time to get all of our fluffy outdoor friends cozy and warm on the ranch.

Karine leads the charge as we build DIY plastic-bin rabbit shelters so our bunnies stay dry, safe, and protected during the colder months. Drilling vents, cutting doors, dodging bunny chaos… yep—just another day on the Ranchette!

🌨️ Why DIY Rabbit Shelters?

If you raise rabbits outdoors—whether you’re on a farm, homestead, or small ranchette—you know how quickly cold weather can sneak up.These shelters are:

  • Simple to make

  • Inexpensive

  • Easy to clean

  • Weather-resistant

  • Safe for outdoor use all season

And the best part? You can build them with basic supplies you probably already have!

🛠️ What We Built in This Episode

Here’s what we walk through step-by-step:

✔ Choosing plastic bins✔ Drilling ventilation holes✔ Cutting entrances safely✔ Setting up shelters in each rabbit area✔ Bedding and insulation tips✔ Winter prep ideas for outdoor rabbits

A little drilling, a little cutting, a lot of laughter—and of course plenty of rabbit personality along the way.

🐇 Our Winter Bunny Setup

Each shelter includes:

  • A weather-resistant plastic storage bin

  • Bedding such as straw or wood shavings

  • Ventilation (important!)

  • Raised bases to keep moisture out

  • Placement near wind protection

The goal: warm, dry, draft-free, and safe all winter long.

🌟 Ranch Life Moments

Like always, things don’t go exactly as planned…

  • Someone tries to dodge “mystery pellets”

  • Someone gets volunteered for more work than planned

  • And the rabbits supervise the entire project like tiny foremen 😂

This is ranch life at its finest—useful projects mixed with humor and a little chaos.

🧰 Supplies Used

  • Large plastic storage bins (with lids)

  • Cordless drill

  • Sharp utility knife or hole saw

  • Wood shavings or straw

  • Zip ties (optional)

  • Gloves for safety
