A New Beginning for Gus: Welcoming a Rescue Horse to the Ranchette

There are moments in life that remind you why you love animals so much. For us, one of those moments came the day we met Gus.
Gus is the newest member of our growing ranchette family, and his story starts in a place no horse deserves to be — a kill pen. When Karine first saw him, she didn’t see a worn-down horse that needed help. She saw a gentle giant with kind eyes and a heart that just needed a second chance.
And just like that, Gus became part of our story.
Meeting Gus at the Stables
When we brought Gus to the stables, it was clear he had been through a lot. His hooves were in rough shape and he still had old horseshoes that needed to come off. The first step in helping him start fresh was getting him comfortable again.
A good farrier visit was high on the priority list so his hooves could be trimmed properly and the old shoes removed. Proper hoof care is essential for any horse, especially one that may have gone too long without regular attention.
But the hooves were just the beginning.
The Challenge of Gus’s Coat
Gus had a thick, matted coat that clearly hadn’t been cared for in a while. Grooming him wasn’t just a matter of brushing him out — it required serious trimming.
We suspect Gus may have Cushing’s Disease (PPID), a condition that many older horses develop. One of the most common signs is difficulty shedding their winter coat. When that happens, the horse can become uncomfortable and even overheat, making it necessary for owners to trim the coat manually.
Karine jumped right in with the clippers.
What we thought might be a quick grooming session turned into a bit of an adventure. Between the thick hair and the matted areas, it took multiple shavers and plenty of patience before we finally got Gus cleaned up.
But the transformation was worth it.
By the end of the trimming session, Gus looked like a completely different horse — and more importantly, he looked comfortable and relaxed.
Checking on the Rest of the Crew
No trip to the stables would be complete without checking on the rest of the animals.
We made sure the donkey got fed and, of course, our three girls — Lilly, Olive, and Ellie Mae — were ready for their meals and their favorite treats.
If you’ve ever owned horses, you know that treat time is serious business.
The girls made sure we didn’t forget.
The Best Surprise of All
While Gus was getting settled into his new life, there was another special reason for the day.
It was Karine’s birthday.
And Gus was actually her birthday present.
Watching her with him made it clear we made the right decision. The connection was instant, and seeing her smile while working with him reminded me how special these animals really are.
Later that evening we celebrated at home with a few gifts, birthday candles, and of course a birthday wish.
I can only imagine what she wished for…
My guess? Probably another horse.
Which, I’ll admit, makes me just a little nervous.
A New Life for Gus
Rescuing a horse is never just about bringing an animal home. It’s about giving them a second chance at the life they deserve.
Gus may have come from a difficult situation, but today he’s surrounded by care, attention, and a family that already loves him.
And for us, that’s what Ranchette Dreams is all about — living close to the land, caring for animals, and building a life filled with moments that truly matter.
Welcome to the family, Gus.
